custom built Heat Shield for The Esse Ironheart Cookstove

None of our heat shields are UL listed or tested. To do so would make the cost prohibitive. They are designed using a engineering principle that says a one inch ventilated air space between layers, equals a 66% reduction in Clearances to Combustibles, called a "K Factor". This is an approved NFPA formula and is widely used in commercial, industrial and architectural applications by engineers and architects in various applications where protection from radiant heat is necessary. (For example, a KQ stove requires a 36" clearance to combustibles, our heat shield would reduce that down to 10 1/4" with double wall chimney) 8" Double Wall Black Chimney, 18" Single Wall Black Chimney clearance to combustibles.
Click Here for the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA 211-26) for info on how to reduce clearances

Note: Putting brick or masonry over a combustible wall without a 1" airspace, will actually make the spontaneous combustion issue worse as the masonry will absorb the heat from the stove and transfer it into the wall cavity.
This can take many years, but eventually the wood in the wall will dry out to a point where Spontaneous Combustion can occur.
It takes three things to make combustion (Fire).
1. Fuel (wood inside your wall)
2. Heat (your stove)
3. Oxygen (a hole in the wall to feed wire or plumbing through)
If you deny any one of these, combustion cannot occur.
The way our heat shield works is by removing the heat transfer part of the equation.
We have tested our heat shields and they allow less than 5% heat transfer through them when properly installed. They also transfer wasted radiant energy that would normally be trapped in the wall behind the stove, into more efficient Convection Heating. We have measured a 30% increase in the Kitchen Queen's convection ability with our heat shield installed.
This translates into a cooler kitchen and warmer back rooms furthest away from the stove, than you would experience without the heat shield.
Radiant heat equates - the closer you get the hotter it gets.
Convection heat is more natural and comfortable using the laws of Thermodynamics, (heat goes up, cool goes down). Our shields pull the cool air from the floor and use it to cool the heat shield and absorb the heat from the rear of the stove as the air travels up through the heat shield. This warm air is then naturally convected into the air flow in your home. A good example of how this works is to light a wood match and blow it out, watch the smoke from the match as it begins to travel in the natural convection zones in your home.

5 of 5 Heat shield for the ESSE Ironheart May 4, 2012
Reviewer: Keith from Pennsylvania
I'll start out describing my dilemma. I have wood plank paneling covering my dry wall and I did not want to follow the clearances for combustibles because that would push to stove to further out into room than I wanted.

After installation and test firing the stove I can tell you the heat shield works great. I cannot feel any radiant heat in the clearance space at all. The recommend clearance to combustibles with the Ironheart is 20", with the heat shield I was able to set it at 12". You can move it closer to combustibles but was I limited to the 90 degree stove pipe that was used in the installation of the oven.

Also the angled top redirects the heat back into the room in an efficient manner. It also acts a splash guard from grease when cooking on the hob.

In all the custom built heat shield for the ESSE Ironheart works great. I was able to reduce clearances to combustibles and it redirect heat back into the room making heating the house more efficient.
