We bought our first VC stove in 1979 when we returned to Maryland after four years on Nantucket Island and decided to heat our home with wood. The Defiant was an amazing heat throwing monster and in hindsight I shouldn’t have placed it where I did. But what a brilliant piece of work it was.
Fast forward many years and I put a Merrimack in the beautiful stone fireplace in our 40 year old semi solar home and I couldn’t be happier. It is amazingly beautiful for starters, and it’s functionality is excellent. I put a 6†SS liner in the ≈24’ chimney and it draws wonderfully. Far and away the very best looking and most useful improvement ( maybe second to new kitchen) improvement I’ve done here.
If you can find one of these ANYWHERE, buy it immediately.

Merrimack Review

Sad to see it discontinued, but 5 stars though. Bought new 9 years ago and it quickly became one of the best investments I ever made. I can't say enough about this stove and how well it works. I put roughly 8 cord through this thing every year since and it still cranks out the heat safely and efficiently (please note I maintain the hell out of this thing as one MUST do with any furnace or stove). On top of everything, it's a beautiful stove with ornate metal workmanship and glass panels on the doors to view the fire. I finally had to buy oil this past year only because I heard it goes bad from sitting - otherwise the stove could have very sufficiently kept heating my 1800 sq ft house for many more years to come without it. The only downfall - parts are expensive, and now unfortunately, hard to find. Too bad.
